The Falla celebrations are well underway and as always there is plenty of political satire

Valencia is currently enjoying the Falla celebrations and as always some of the statues mark political satire of the moment, at least until they are burnt to ash on Thursday.

On some occasions the traditional cagador, ‘the crapper’, is depicted by a politician or even this year by the Prime Minister, Zapatero, who on one occasion here has left a pile labeled the Galician elections.

Also much in evidence this year are international leaders Obama, and Sarkozy, and of course the President of the Valencia region, Francisco Camps, and the National Court judge, Baltasar Garzón.
Figaro’s Wedding has Obama as America’s bride, while Zapatero, Sarkozy, Merkel, Berlusconi and even Gordon Brown are a band of gangsters, 20’s style.

Zapatero and Rajoy are also depicted as drag queens this year, while Judge Garzón is a scout digging at the historical memory law.

But there was also another event in Valencia on Monday when a dozen or so anti bullfighting protestors stripped off in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento in protest at Spain’s national fiesta. Semi nude and covered in red paint and bandarrillas, they represented the bulls killed every year as part of the Fallas fiestas.

On Sunday the in vogue bullfighter, José Tomas, sold out the city’s bullring and was carried out on the shoulders of those present in triumph.
