Born down in a dead man’s town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
You end up like a dog that’s been beat too much
‘Til you spend half your life just covering up

[chorus:]
Born in the U.S.A. ( 4 TIMES)

I got in a little hometown jam
And so they put a rifle in my hands
Sent me off to Vietnam
To go and kill the yellow man

[chorus]

Come back home to the refinery
Hiring man says “Son if it was up to me”
I go down to see the V.A. man
He said “Son don’t you understand”

[chorus] I had a buddy at Khe Sahn
Fighting off the Viet Cong
They’re still there, he’s all gone
He had a little girl in Saigon
I got a picture of him in her arms

Down in the shadow of the penitentiary
Out by the gas fires of the refinery
I’m ten years down the road
Nowhere to run, ain’t got nowhere to go

I’m a long gone Daddy in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
I’m a cool rocking Daddy in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.

Bullies film attack in Tavernes

Schoolgirl surrounded and beaten

 By Joe Wickman
THE PEOPLE OF Tavernes de la Valldigna were shocked when they heard of the latest case of school violence that took place in the local school.

A 13-year-old girl was set upon by fellow students who filmed the attack and spread the video around via internet and mobile phones. The first signs that something like this would happen had already appeared, as some children had painted some drawings against the future victim on a nearby wall. The attack happened when the girl was leaving school and was surrounded by other students who made it impossible for her to escape. They all begun shouting insulting comments at her until one of the other girls, also aged 13, hit her. Not only did this fail to cause surprise or repulse, but it motivated the others, who reportedly encouraged more slaps by saying things like ‘hit her harder, she isn’t crying yet’. Fortunately the situation ended there and no more aggressions took place. What made it worse, however, is the fact that some of the students recorded the aggression on their mobile phones and have been sending it to as many people as possible. The town hall has passed the case on to police as well as getting together with the school council in order to decide further measures that will be taken against the perpetrators. The school has already made the students apologise for what happened, but they will come up with other methods through which they hope the teenagers will realise the importance of the physical and psychological damage these situations inflict upon the victims.

“CANNON” AD (B1)

The Sunday papers are full of advertisements like this. But this is a 20-year-old, full-page , black and white advert…. Can you believe it? I´ve had it for over 20 years!!! I still keep it with my old box of bits and pieces because  it has a catchy slogan.

IF   ANYONE

What do you think they were advertising?

Can you work out what the slogan means?

Do you like it? Why? Why not?

I CAN´T DANCE (A1)

Remembering songs, song tittles, or just the chorus is a good memory technique to remember  grammar. “I CAN´T DANCE” , as you know, is unit 4A, dealing with the modal verb CAN.  The song by GENESIS can be a good example for a negative sentence. But how many songs in English do you know, containing this modal verb (CAN) in the tittle or the chorus? Let´s make a list and then vote for the best ones.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS FOR THE SPANISH SWEET ON A STICK

The Chupa Chups lollipops are 50 years old. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

It was back in 1958 that the Catalan confectioner, Enric Bernat, first launched his new idea onto the market, an invention which he thought up to stop children getting their hands dirty every time they took a sweet out of their mouths.
His Chupa Chups lollipops – the sweet on a stick – are now sold all over the world, and are probably Spain’s most famous brand. Named for the Spanish word ‘chupar,’ to suck, they are just as popular with adults as they are with children. The company has kept up with the times by introducing new flavours, and came to the rescue of would-be non-smokers with their mini chupa chups – six mini lollies in a cigarette-style box, in citrus flavours with plant extracts to help the smoker relax.

Chupa Chups was at the Goya Awards last Sunday to celebrate its 50th birthday by handing out free lollipops to the celebrities who attended the gala. There are two events next Monday, 20 minutos reports: the Chupa Chup-sponsored motorcyclist, Jorge Lorenzo, is in Barcelona, and the bullfighter, Óscar Higares, in Madrid, where one million Chupa Chups will be given out to the public.
