BÁRCENAS WILL BE RELEASED AFTER 18 MONTHS IN JAIL (LOW B2)
NEWS: Mr. Bárcenas will leave Soto del Real prison in Madrid tomorrow after paying the €200,000 bail set by the High Court, and must appear before the judge three times a week.
Former Popular Party (PP) treasurer Luis Bárcenas is set to leave Soto del Real prison in Madrid tomorrow following 18 months on remand during the investigation of complex corruption scandals affecting Spain’s governing party.
His lawyer Javier Gómez de Liaño told Spanish newspapers that the €200,000 bail had been collected by “numerous” family members, who would deposit the amount in a court-designated bank account on Thursday morning.
“He is calm”, said Mr. Gómez: “When one is in that situation, like the one he is in, of almost being able to touch freedom, well you can imagine how he is”.
Mr. Bárcenas’s release on bail will come just a day before the Popular Party holds a national conference in Madrid to debate the party’s strategy for Spain’s 2015 quadruple election year.
Party leaders and members are anxiously awaiting news of which powerful barons Mariano Rajoy will choose to head the electoral lists in Spain’s regions and major cities.
Referring to Mr. Bárcenas and the renewed interest in the case, PP Secretary General María Dolores de Cospedal said: “If there was an off-the-books accounting system, it belonged to the person in charge, not the PP”.
