WHAT TO AVOID IN “FORMAL” TEXTS

 DO NOT USE THESE FORMS

CONTRACTIONS Use I am writing this email instead of I’ m writing

PHRASAL VERBS ( whenever possible) use one word verbs like tolerate instead of put up with

DIRECT QUESTIONS Use indirect questions when possible: (Could you possibly tell me…..? I would be very grateful if you could tell me….)

IDIOMS. Use “I wish you the best of luck” instead of “Break a leg!”

ABBREVIATIONS – use approximately instead of approx.

EXCLAMATION MARKS – don’t use!!!!

INCOMPLETE SENTENCES – (I will) see you soon

SOME CONNECTORSbut, however, therefore… Try to use nevertheless, whereas, thus, etc.

PERSONAL TONE USE the passive (whenever possible)

IMPOLITE TONE Use I would be very grateful if you could tell me…” instead of “I want to know….”

SHORTER & VERY SIMPLE SENTENCES Use “I am not only hard-working but also work well in a team” instead of “I work hard and I’m friendly”

THE SOCIALLY DISTANCED ARRIVAL OF THE 3 WISE MEN (ALL LEVELS)

Captura de pantalla 2021-01-03 a las 11.52.36

Unfortunately this year there will not be the traditional PARADES due to the COVID19 situation, as safety must be prioritised and large crowds cannot be permitted: a curfew will be in place for the 3 Kings’ Day from 11pm and the border around Valencia will remain closed until at least January 15th. On top of that  six people can only meet apart from on 3 Kings´Day Eve, when up to 10 can meet, providing they´re not from more than two different households Things will be slightly different this year..

Covid-19 restrictions might have curtailed our movements this year, but they haven’t been able to dampen the spirits of the youngest amongst us, who are still as excited as ever about the imminent arrival of the Three Kings. With traditional parades and processions out of the question across most of Spain, many local councils have found alternative ways of staging the annual arrival of the Kings, on the evening of January 5th, without contravening any current healthcare constraints.

Some of Spain’s most emblematic cities like Seville, Cáceres, Madrid, Barcelona, Santander, Zaragoza, Ibiza, Ciudad Real, Logroño and Murcia are intent on keeping the magic alive on Tuesday, albeit in rather unusual ways: by hot air balloon, in a convertible car, via livestream…” (READ MORE…)

The City Council of Valencia has already announced that this year there will be no parade around the city or gift giving. On this occasion, Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar will attend a reception on January 5, in the Crystal Hall of the consistory itself. The act will be broadcast by institutional signal, so it can be followed “from all homes in Valencia”.

In Spain, the tradition of gift giving at Christmas is particularly special for children. They are the ones who await most eagerly the arrival of the Three Wise Men, who come in through the windows house by house, sharing out presents in just one night. They are not the only ones to have a good time, however. Grown-ups cannot help becoming infected by their happiness during the preparations for the big day: 6 January.

Sharing the exciting wait with them is a gift of love and emotion. This Christmas tradition fills the little ones’ days with unforgettable magic.

The Letter

First of all, children have to write their letter to the Three Wise Men, saying which presents they would like them to bring. After this comes one of the favourite moments: giving the letter in. They can either give the letter to the Wise Men personally when they arrive “officially” on 5 January, or to the emissaries and royal postmen to be found in the centre of all Spanish towns a few days before. They will be asked if they have been good at school and at home, because naughty children get left coal instead of presents. Although, in truth, it is a “sweet” punishment because the coal is made of sugar.

Spectacular parades

When the long-awaited day finally arrives, the whole family come out onto the street to receive the Wise Men. They arrive with a traditional parade, riding through the streets on their camels, loaded with presents and accompanied by royal pages who throw sweets and goodies to the children. One by one, the delightful floats pass by, decorated with bright colours and inspired in popular children’s characters. The little ones will love them. All the while, a band brings joy to the celebration with Christmas songs and carols. The spectacle of joy, light and colour, combined with the smiles of the children, make for a feeling of complete happiness.

There are parades celebrated all over Spain on this day. Each has its own particular style, depending on where you are. In Barcelona, for example, the Three Wise Men arrive by sea, while in the village of Alarilla, in Guadalajara, they are daring enough to arrive by hang-glider and paraglider. Or why not see the parade in Alcoi, Alicante, the oldest in Spain?

Three Kings’ Night

After the parade, children go to bed early but excited, to wait for Melchoir, Caspar and Balthazar to come in through the window and leave presents in their shoes. First they should put water and bread on the windowsill for the camels to eat and drink while the Wise Men do their work.

Come and experience Christmas in Spain and discover this magical tradition that will fill your children with joy. Let them get carried away by all the moments of joy, surprise and tender happiness to be found in our country at this festive time.

Now is your chance. Make the most of it!!!

WHICH TOY MARKED YOUR CHILDHOOD?

comediscos-3

I will always remember the so-called “comediscos”, a kind of portable record player for singles that I could take anywhere, bandoleer style. I´ve always loved music and dancing, so the possibility of listening to my own music with my friends and dance or rehearse different choreographies was the latest technology when I was 10, something from another world….

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS 2021(B1.1)

PHOTO PIXABAY

DURING THE HOLIDAY YOU WORKED WITH “GOING TO” & THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS FOR FUTURE PLANS & ARRANGEMENTS…BUT HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW ABOUT “WILL” TO TALK ABOUT THE FUTURE?

THIS YEAR I WILL ….

….. do all my English homework.

……watch films and series in English with subtitles.

…..study harder and read more.

We use WILL to express and talk about PROMISES, DECISIONS, PREDICTIONS and to OFFER help.
Promise = I’ll never leave you darling!

Prediction= It’ll rain later.

Offer= I’ll carry the books for you.

Decisions = I will stop smoking.

Promesa: I will always love you

Decisiones: Tomorrow, I will go to the mall and buy a TV.

Ofrecimientos: I will help you with that table.

Predicción: Maria won’t get married.

SO, WHAT ARE YOUR NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS FOR 2021?

Do you make New Year’s resolutions? What is a resolution? A resolution is a promise. It is a promise that you make to yourself! It is a tradition for people to make resolutions at the beginning of a new year. There are different kinds of resolutions.

One sort of resolution has to do only with oneself. You can decide to lose weight, to stop eating candy, to exercise more, or to watch less TV. Other resolutions can involve family or friends. You could resolve to be more patient with your little brother, to be more helpful to your mum, or not to get into fights with your friends. Some resolutions are about school and the outside world, such as getting to class on time, trying for better grades, or not teasing the neighbor’s dog.

If you manage to keep these promises, it will make you feel better about yourself. So, it’s important not to make wild resolutions that are too difficult to follow. Your promises to yourself should not be too hard to keep.

THIS YEAR I WILL…….
