AN ASSOCIATION for the disabled has called for the Christmas lottery to be suspended because it ‘uses minors’ to promote it.

Every year on December 22, the children from the San Ildefonso primary school in Madrid ‘sing’ the winning numbers on TV as they draw them out, a tradition dating back decades.

But the organisation OID has filed legal action with the youth prosecution services against what it calls ‘child labour’.

It says images on TV show children selling tickets, which it considers to be against the law.

The OID wants the lottery to be put off until the State betting board can ‘guarantee that minors will not be used in promoting’ the famous El Gordo national draw.

Instead, the organisation wants to see ‘persons representative of the disabled community’ drawing the winning numbers on the TV.

According to the organisation, 10 years ago legal action was taken against the national lottery in aid of the blind, ONCE, ordering them to cease using models for their draws because it ‘showed a sexist image of women’ as ‘objects of beauty’.
